Group Classes

These jewelry-making classes are taught by Jay Whaley in the fully equipped and well lit Whaley Studios in Hillcrest. Our classes are designed for all levels of experience. Students taking this class will learn a variety of metalsmithing techniques to create original finished jewelry of their own design. Alloying, pouring of ingots, and rolling out of custom wire and sheet stock will be covered, as well as pattern-making, sawing, filing, forming, texturing and finishing techniques.

Students will get familiar with annealing processes and different types of soldering with single and multi-fuel torches. Most work in silver and gold, but are not limited to those metals. Precision model making for lost wax casting will be explored, as well as in-studio vacuum and centrifugal casting. Vulcanized and room-temp molds can also be made for replication casting and limited editions.

Gemstones of all sizes and shapes can also be brought in and incorporated into the jewelry being made. Custom bezels and mountings can be made in class.

Individual help is provided for each step of the creative process from design through completion and all necessary tools and equipment are available for use.

Supplies: Metals, supplies and tools can be purchased during class time.
Duration: These classes are held for 2 ½ hours, once a week, for 8 weeks. Summer session is 5 weeks, discounted fee.
Class size: Limited to a maximum of 12 students per class.
