TORCHED-FIRED ENAMELLING WORKSHOP

$135.00

Torch-Fired Enameling Workshop

Saturday, April 8th, 2017 from 10am to 5pm

Traditional glass enameling is a beautiful method for adding color to jewelry through fusing powdered glass to metal. The glass forms a smooth, colorful, glossy coating on the metal’s surface and can greatly enhance the appearance of one’s jewelry. What makes torch-fired enameling particularly appealing is the method’s immediacy and lack of requirement for expensive equipment.

Demonstrations will be given on sifted and sgraffito enameling techniques. Sgraffito involves scratching into the powdered enamel prior to firing, giving the final piece the look of a pencil illustration.

Each student will leave the workshop having completed their very own enameled earrings and pendant.

Beginning to advanced students welcome!

All materials are included in the workshop.

There will be a 30 minute break for lunch. Bring your own sack lunch or grab lunch in the area.

Fee: $135.00 per student, includes materials

Instructor: Tara Magboo

Ms. Magboo has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she discovered her love of jewelry fabrication. She continued to pursue higher education at San Diego State University for a Master of Fine Arts degree in Jewelry and Metalsmithing. The interdisciplinary approach of her formal education broadened her technical abilities in a variety of materials beyond metal, such as acrylic plastic, wood, resin, and alabaster. In addition, her practical experience working in the fashion jewelry industry, as well as exhibiting her own work professionally, has brought her abilities full-circle, enabling her to become a more well-rounded instructor. Tara taught beginning through advanced jewelry making courses at the UCSD Crafts Center for almost five years and continues to teach here at Whaley Studios. She is also the sole proprietor of her own jewelry business “Magboo Jewelry Company” and sells her work at various retail shows such as Comic-Con International.
